Luis Chacon- Biography
Luis Chacón, during the last three decades, has been one of the most prominent figures in the Cultural field in Costa Rica. As both Artist and international cultural promoter, he is, in Central America, one of the most notable personalities during the end of the 20th Century and the beginning of the 21st Century.
As an icon in the world of cultural promotion, we owe Luis Chacon the creation of the National Gallery of Contemporary Art (Galeria Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo - GANAC). This Gallery opened doors with a collection of more than five hundred pieces of international art donated by his colleagues. He has established the Museum of Art and Contemporary Design (Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo); created the Art in Public Spaces Project (Arte en Espacios Públicos) for the Capital’s City Hall that is the very first open air museum in San Jose; and founded one of the best known groups of Central American painters: BOCARACA.
As an artist, his strong academic formation has lead to one success after another. He holds a Doctorate degree in Fine Arts from the Sorbonne University (Universidad de La Sorbona ) in Paris . Furthermore, as a never-ending research scientist in the world of the plastic arts, Dr. Chacon is a constant traveler and in his traveling he has given lectures and exhibitions and has experienced international exchanges among artists.
LUIS CHACON is the undisputed heir to Costa Rica’s landscape artists, such as Gallardo, Quiros, and Pacheco. With Luis Chacon, the landscape takes on a new dimension: expansive, conceptualized, fragmented, reduced, modified, and/or modernized. In today’s world, said theme is pictured against the social backdrop of the moment: climatic change and global warming.And of course, fully loaded with color.
He has been distinguished with many awards: The National Prize for Painting (Premio Nacional de Pintura), 1989, 1992; the first and only Biennial Lachner & Saenz prize, 1984; the Ancora Prize, 1982, 1992.
He has represented Costa Rica in prominent international competitions, such as the Cuban Biennial, 1986, the Valparaiso Biennial, 1988, the Pedro Domec Biennial, , in México, 1993, the Sao Paulo Biennial, 1995, the Cuenca Biennial, 1995, the Arte Actual de Iberoamerica, Plaza Colon, Madrid,1978
His solo sows have been exhibited in various museums: the Museum of the Americas , Washington , D.C. , 1983, Museo de la Estampa , México, D.F., 1992, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Rio de Janiero, Brazil , 1996, Museum of Contemporary Art , Seul , South Korea , 2006. And of course, in the majority of the museums in Costa Rica.
His works are on display in World Collections, such as: L’UNESCO, La Maison de Amerique Latine, Paris, The Society of Japanese Artists, Tokyo, Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan, Museum of Contemporary Arts, Taiwan, Museum of the Americas, Washington, D.C., Latin American Memorial, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and in Costa Rica the following museums: National Museum, Museum of Costa Rican Art, Museum of Art and Contemporary Design, National Archives, National Library, Central Bank Museums Complex, Presidential House and so many more.
Luis Chacon will be, forever, the inspirational leader of new cultural projects, and the impassioned investigator in the world of the arts.
